The woods used in crafting this Japanese Lantern (Andon) are Eucalyptus grandis, and Eucalyptus robusta.
Eucalyptus grandis, commonly known as the flooded gum or rose gum, is a tall tree with smooth bark, rough at the base, fibrous or flaky, grey to grey-brown. At maturity, it reaches 160 feet tall. It is found on coastal areas and sub-costal ranges of Australia, where it is the dominant tree of wet forests and on the margins of rainforests. The lumber has a pinkish tinge and is used in joinery, flooring, boat building, paneling and plywood.
Eucalyptus robusta commonly known as swamp mahogany or swamp messmate, is a tree native to eastern Australia. The leaves are commonly eaten by insects and are a food item for the Koala. It is an important autumn-winter flowering species in eastern Australia and has been planted extensively in many countries around the world.
The gandis and robusta used for this lamp were grown here on the island of Hawai'i, milled and seasoned at Kamuela Hardwoods in Waimea.
Instead of traditional rice paper, the shade for the Andon is made of vintage Japanese kimono silk mounted on plexiglass. To prevent the fabric from fading, please do not expose the lamp to prolong outdoor light. Use only LED light bulbs in the lamp to prevent the possibility of heat buildup.
